- The district publishes a land acknowledgement on its website. “The High School resides on Land ceded in the 1819 Treaty of Saginaw. We recognize and uplift the sovereignty of the twelve federally-recognized nations in Michigan and all other legally unrecognized nations.” Yet they haven’t suggested giving back the land.
- The district has a Director of Equity and Social Justice and created school specific social justice teams.
- Sex education includes curriculum about LGBTQ. “ELPS supports creating a safe, supportive learning environment for all students. This includes students who identify as lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ). Lesson content has been added to ensure that the curriculum reaches all students.”
- As part of the sex ed curriculum, teachers use “a table top model of a penis to demonstrate the proper method for putting on a condom and removing it.”
- Sixth grade sex ed curriculum teaches students how to be an LGBTQIA+ ally. The curriculum also connects “students with supportive resources in school and at home related to gender and sexuality.” The district wants to “Increase understanding, acceptance, and respect for individual gender identity and sexual orientation.”
